Tips For Living With PD





Living With PD is hard. Sometimes the meds aren’t much better. This page contains ideas to make it easier. Please contribute your suggestions and  I will publish them. 

 Get involved with the Parkinson’s community. Learn as much as you can about PD.  We are our own best resource.

 Give yourself extra time to do everything.

 Sinemet (Madopar in the EU) is an amino acids. Take it 45 minutes before eating or 90 minutes after eating so as not to compete with food protein for absorption.

 Use straws to help drink if you shake.

 Night lights everywhere you walk at night to prevent falls.

 Shoe horns to put shoes on. Velcro straps to fasten them.

 Install grab bars everywhere and especially in the bathroom. Put non skid mats in the bathtub.

 Use credit cards so you don't have to fumble with cash.

 Skateboard tennis shoes which are wide and flat on the bottom help with balance.

 Swing arms when walking.

 Chew gum if you are conscious of your mouth hanging open.

 Use an elect0ric toothbrush.

 The google spoon works and is worth it if you need it but can use some design improvement.

 Eating with a spoon is easier than a fork and don't be embarrassed to use fingers.

 Velcro fastening clothes and shoes.

 Walking poles/sticks/canes.

 Practice walking consciously. Take 10 big steps, then swing your arms for 10 steps, then straighten your spine and walk tall for 10 steps, then put them all together for 20 steps, relax for 10 steps. Repeat.

 Tai Chi and Quigong for gentle exercise good for flexibility and balance.

 Join a PD group. Get to know and learn from other people with PD.

 Make friends with another person with PD for support. Share information and miseries.

 Be social. I often forget I have PD when I enjoy myself with others.

 Use a small rolling cart to help move things from kitchen to table.

 Use chairs with seats that are 2 - 4 inches higher to make getting up easier.

 If you freeze and can't move your feet, try lifting your knees instead and your feet will follow.

 Make a fist to stop your hands from shaking.
